CARBONDALE, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — A decades-old mystery is coming back to life in Carbondale, where a new documentary is revisiting one of the most talked-about UFO sightings in NEPA history. The film, Fire in the Pond, just started production, and it’s already bringing renewed attention to the 1974 sighting that put Carbondale on the paranormal map.
For decades, the Carbondale UFO sighting has been debated. What really fell into the silt pond that night in 1974? The new film Fire in the Pond is exploring that question, mixing documentary and narrative storytelling to bring the legend back to life.
Paranormal researcher and documentarian Heather Taddy is leading the investigation and says not all the evidence adds up.
“The eyewitness accounts aren’t matching what was reported in the police documents. Just trying to match things up and just to really get to the bottom of what happened here,” said Taddy.
But even if the truth is never fully uncovered, Taddy says the story itself is still worth sharing.
“It’s great because it’s raising awareness for a big event that happened here, and now there’s a festival every year. Even if it was just a railroad lantern, it’s something fun, and it’s teaching people about the history of the area.”
Producer Bob Savakinus says the project isn’t just about uncovering the truth—it’s also about showcasing local talent.
“We have a lot of great talent in our area, and it gives us a great opportunity to showcase that talent by making films here. So many times, I hear people say, ‘Oh, we have to travel outside the area to Philly or New York,’ but no—we can make, and we are making, movies right here in our area,” said Savakinus.
And they’re doing it in a unique way, blending real history with creative storytelling.
“We are making a unique project in that it’s a documentary, mockumentary narrative film, so it’s a hybrid of media. I think we’re going to tell that story, the historical aspect of it, and then turn into a narrative story. So, we’re going to entertain but also educate people,” said Savakinus.
Fire in the Pond is expected to premiere in November, just in time for this year’s Carbondalien Festival.
